Kent Doubles was a success at Hartley

05 August 2007

The 2007 Kent Doubles Championships were held at Hartley Country Club on Sunday 5th August.

Incredibly hot temperatures (yes we did have some this summer), saw many of the participants flagging before lunchtime and even more so after as the heat increased.  The shelter of the trees and the covered way places were at a premium as the afternoon progressed.

24 teams entered the competition and after the morning league sessions, 16 went into the main and the other 8 into the plate. This was an amazing number considering the lack of real publicity for the event.

The Plate was won by Mags and Ron Yates who beat Janet and David Rayner of GRFC in the final.

The main semi-final losers were:
Rachide Hannache and Martin Baker, both of the Plough and Chequers who lost a close match 13-12 to Matt Horrigan (Lordswood) and Dave Chalkley (Plough & Chequers) who after having an easy 11-2 lead ended up having a fight on their hands.

Joyce and Mick Nash were beaten easily in the other semi by Matt Shrimpton (Old Sheaf) and Kris Smith (Plough and Chequers), 13-4.

The Main final was won by Matt Horrigan and Dave Chalkley who had a very easy 13-2 win over Matt Shrimpton and Kris Smith to become the 2007 Kent Doubles Champions.

Mick Nash was not only playing but was also running the competition (with help from Colin Senneck and others from Hartley), he was also taking photos as well as celebrating his 35th wedding anniversary and putting up with considerable abuse from all and sundry because he hadn't bought an anniversary card!
