Hartley players lead England to victory

12 August 2007

Four Hartley players, Irene Gibbs, Colin Gibbs, Colin Senneck, and Charles Fribbens were part of the successful England squad at the Hoe Nations competition, held at Inverness in Scotland on the weekend of 11th and 12th August, 2007.

Playing as EPA1, the Hartley triple of Irene and the two Colins led the way to victory winning four games out of six on each day.  Charles, with his Junior colleagues (Phil Jarrett, Alex Bruce and Robert Cooter) as EPA Juniors 1 went better with two perfect six out of six victories over the two days.

Many congratulations to all of them in their first experience representing their country.

Kent was further well represented with another adult triple of Mark Cooter, David Blakely and Allan Cregeen (EPA5).

Overall England won 66 games, Scotland 47 and Wales 31.  For the juniors England won 23 games, Wales 9 and Scotland 4.

The weather was mainly dry on Saturday but wet on Sunday with the new pistes at the Loch Ness Golf Course, Inverness, becoming waterlogged but the quality and depth of the England squad overcame the difficulties.  The Scottish Petanque Association arranged various events and ensured the whole weekend went smoothly.  The long journeys that all had seemed to have been worthwhile.
